What to ExpectAm I Actually Good at This?, is a 2-hour live, interactive continuing education training designed to help counselors examine the relationship between imposter phenomenon, counselor self-efficacy, perfectionism, professional identity, and accurate self-assessment.
❋ Understand Imposter PhenomenonExplore why capable counselors may still question their abilities or discount evidence of competence. Learn how imposter phenomenon can show up in professional counseling practice.
❋ Recognize Self-Doubt PatternsIdentify patterns such as perfectionism, comparison, fear of mistakes, and difficulty accepting positive feedback. Examine how these patterns can influence the way you evaluate yourself as a counselor.
❋ Evaluate Competence AccuratelyLearn to distinguish between imposter feelings, normal professional uncertainty, and a genuine area for growth. Develop a more balanced way of assessing what you know, what you do well, and where you still need support.
❋ Strengthen Professional ConfidenceExplore evidence-informed strategies for developing counselor self-efficacy and a healthier professional identity. Build confidence that leaves room for continued learning, supervision, and professional growth.
Why Do Capable Counselors Still Question Themselves?
Counseling is a profession filled with uncertainty. There isn't always an immediate way to know whether you said the right thing, chose the best intervention, or helped as much as you hoped. Add the responsibility of caring for people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives, and professional self-doubt can become easy to understand.
But self-doubt does not automatically mean you lack competence. In this training, we'll examine why counselors may struggle to internalize evidence of their abilities, how professional development can intensify uncertainty, and why learning to evaluate yourself accurately matters for both your professional growth and the clients you serve.
Is It Imposter Phenomenon—or Do I Actually Need to Learn More?
Not every moment of professional self-doubt is imposter phenomenon. Sometimes uncertainty is a normal part of becoming a more experienced counselor—and sometimes it is an important signal that we need additional knowledge, supervision, consultation, or training.
The goal isn't to silence every doubt or convince ourselves that we're always competent. It's to learn how to evaluate the doubt accurately. During this training, we'll explore how to distinguish between imposter phenomenon, developmental uncertainty, and genuine competence gaps so that you can respond appropriately rather than automatically assuming, “I'm just not good at this.”
Because healthy professional confidence isn't believing you know everything. It's knowing what you know, recognizing what you're still learning, and knowing when to ask for help.
